Description: Professor Harold Tvedten, at G 347 Veterinary Medical Complex, Michigan State University, has developed a series of (at present) 39 interactive computer lessons on a CD-ROM, designed to teach the interpretation of laboratory test results. The lessons include: H-1 Atlas; Hematology Lessons Emphasizing Morphology (6 lessons); Bone Marrow Cell and Bone Marrow Interpretation-Short (2 lessons); Leukemia; Hematology Techniques; Avian Hematology; Anemia: Basic Cases; General Leukocyte Cases; Heinz Body Anemia Cases; Serum Iron Cases; Blood Parasite Cases; Cytology Lessons (10 lessons); Urinary Sediment and Urinary Sediment-Short (2 lessons); Serum Protein Electrophoresis; Hemostasis Cases and Hemostasis Cases ’94 (2 lessons); Pancreatic and Intestinal Cases (two versions with the same cases but with different software programs); General Renal Cases; Acid-Base Cases-Anion Gap Approach; Electrolyte Cases; Resident Rounds 1 and Resident Rounds 2 (2 lessons). About half the lessons are interpretation of pictures of blood cells, cells in cytological samples, urine sediment or other structures. ’Short’ versions have some of the same pictures of longer versions but require less Time per lesson to get basic concepts. Manual assists the participant in evaluating data and finding help on interpretation of various laboratory tests.
Comments & References: Some of the lessons include only pictures. Others include only text. Running time for each lesson: 30 minutes to approximately 1.5 hours. Allows individuals or small groups to make diagnostic conclusions from haematological, chemical and cytological data. The lessons range from basic interpretations for veterinary students up through questions which challenge internists and clinical pathologists. System requirements: 486/335X computer or better, IBM Windows 3.1 or later, 8 MB RAM, I MB Video RAM, 24 bit (16.8 million colour) graphic adapter/monitor combination, double speed CD-ROM drive, at least 14 MB free hard drive space.
