The Koken Rabbit
Record number: 3786
Category: Anatomy and Handling
Type: Model
Description: A training model for animal techniques. The Koken Rabbit model contains an anatomically correct cranium, pharynx, larynx, trachea, stomach and urethra. The model is made of silicone, soft vinyl chloride and synthetic fur (Boa), which help to achieve a texture that is similar to that of a live rabbit. Laboratory rabbits should be spared some of the pain and injury caused by clumsy handling now that novices can practise on artificial rabbits. The Koken Company designed the rabbits so that students could practise common procedures such as animal handling, peroral dosing, intravenous injection and blood collection from the auricular vein, endotracheal intubation and urine collection via urethra by catheterization of female rabbits. Kazuyoshi Maejima of the School of Medicine at Keio University in Tokyo led a team of academics that developed the Koken rabbit jointly with company researchers. From casts of a real rabbits, Maejima and his colleagues built anatomically perfect silicone replicas.
Comments & References: Item number LM-053. Based on casts of female New Zealand White rabbits, weight 2.4 kg. Spare ears and artificial blood (500ml) may be purchased.
