Description: An interactive Hypercard stack to teach the principles of anaesthesiology and anaesthetics in small laboratory animals (mouse, rat and guinea pig). The program is divided into several sections: ANAESTHESIA IN MOUSE, RAT AND GUINEA PIG: These sections give advice on which anaesthetic to use. They contain dose/body volume calculation models to calculate the dose and volume of injection of a range of anaesthetics to give to animals, of differing body weight, of each of the three species. It also displays physiological data (heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature); STAGES OF ANAESTHESIA: Graphical depiction of the stages of anaesthesia. At certain stages the user may simulate testing various reflexes to assess depth of anaesthesia; LOCAL ANAESTHESIA; GENERAL ANAESTHESIA: Injection anaesthesia (different routes, anaesthetics, advice on good practice for administration); inhalation anaesthesia; PRE-ANAESTHESIA; ANALGESIC DRUGS; ANAESTHETIC SUBSTANCES: Advantages and disadvantages of: ether; methoxflurane; halothane; enflurane; sodium pentobarbital; Hypnorm®; Hypnorm® & Dormicum®; ketamine; xylazine; ketamine & xylazine; PAIN RECOGNITION: Drugs, doses, assessment of pain, definitions and diagnosis of pain; TERMINOLOGY: Definitions of: anaesthetic, analgesic, neuroleptic, ataractic, general anaesthesia, local anaesthesia.
