Description: This CD-ROM introduces the wide variety of bacteria, details the internal structures of a bacterial cell, outlines the characteristic shapes and distinguish features by which bacteria are classified.   Contents: INTRODUCTION: WHAT ARE BACTERIA: First appearance on Earth, found everywhere, beneficial/harmful; HOW DO WE RECOGNIZE BACTERIA: Classification in Monera kingdom, further classification according to shape (bacilli, cocci and spirilla), characteristics of cell structure (functions of cytoplasm, DNA, ribosomes, cell membrane and flagellum); HOW DO BACTERIA SURVIVE: Decomposition (most bacteria feed on dead organic matter), photosynthesis (blue-green bacteria/cyanobacteria), asexual reproduction (rapid growth, spores); WHY DO WE STUDY BACTERIA: Medicine (useful in production of antibiotics, harmful in causing disease), ecology (vital role in decomposition), industry (useful in production of food, and in decomposing toxic chemicals), agriculture (nitrogen fixation, nodules, surplus nitrogen). The CD-ROM includes a quiz to test students' understanding and other additional learning aids.
