In order to understand the nature of the debate about animal use in much of
science it is essential to examine the rationale and something of the history
behind the movements to prevent animal experimentation. That the animal
liberation movement has had such an impact on animal use indicates surely that
some of their (our?) arguments are persuasive and that the 3 R's (reduce, refine
and replace) has an important place in modern science. I will attempt to
outline some of the arguments for and against the use of animals within a modern
'ethical' environment and to place those within a social and cultural context.
